This caption was intended to be something snarky, like “Portland: effectively dealing with Louisville’s poverty, racial tension, litter, segregation, homelessness and opioid epidemic so you don’t have to”, but that’s neither nice nor true. Right now there is an unprecedented amount of love pouring out all over this fair city of ours despite our state government’s worst efforts. The holiday season is upon us, and it’s time to kick this positivity initiative into high gear!
Cup of Joy doesn’t have an Instagram account to showcase their most recent heartfelt attempt at inclusivity, so we’ll do the bragging for them. We’re very inspired by what they’re doing around here. This rented roadsign at 22nd & Bank sums it all up.

It’s hard to pinpoint the exact age of this regal farmhouse at 2302 Portland Ave. Best estimates based on architectural details and word-of-mouth accounts date it back to at least 1875, with some reports saying it could have been built before the Civil War.
It’s obvious that the past few decades of neglect have taken their toll. The last known resident was a blind man who lived here 30 years ago, who lined the inside walls with wires to guide him around. Those wires are still in there.
The interior is a dilapidated mess, with closets still full of rotting 1970s clothes, raccoon shit everywhere and floorboards that have deteriorated to the point of no return. Without at least $100k of renovation investment, it won’t be long before this home meets the business end of a bulldozer.
In the meantime, less than a hundred bucks worth of paint - most of it purchased in the “Oops!” mismatch section at Home Depot for $9/gallon - has gone a long way to turn the formerly flaky facade into a colorful Painted Lady. The gothic accents of the porch were easy to accentuate with bright hues, making the whole project feel more like a supersized coloring book and less like a job requiring any artistic talent. If nothing else, it’s proof that we could easily follow New Orleans and San Francisco’s lead by putting the bare minimum of supply costs into beautifying our homes and bringing some tourist-attracting color back into our neighborhood.
It’s devastating to think of these crumbling historic structures wiped off the map completely, but if this one goes, at least it got a little love before the ol’ Viking funeral. Light a candle, 2302 needs a savior! #louisvillelove #ourportlandbuildings
