TOMORROW, Sunday December 15! Head on over to our beloved Portland Museum (@portlandmuseumky) for the 28th annual Holiday Craft Bazaar, from 1-5pm.
There will be vendors, music, hot-off-the-letterpress art, refreshments and a FREE sneak preview of everything new and exciting we’ve got going on over there, including a new interior/exterior paint job, renovated exhibit hallways, stained glass windows and a fleshed-out gift shop to give your holiday wishlist a Portland twist. Shop local? See you there! #louisvillelove Sheesh #louisvillelove We’ve got three new murals up in our neighborhood, and they’re more than just driveby eye candy:
1. “Black Scene” (17th & Duncan) - Black Scene was an early 1970s magazine founded by a group of legendary civil-rights activists including Leo Lesser, John Johnson and attorney Robert Delahanty. The publication focused on social issues and culture commentary, featuring gorgeous works of art created by Louisville’s west end community.
Delahanty’s granddaughter Katy discovered a stash of the original Black Scene magazines in her grandmother Dolores’ basement, and is currently working with journalist Michael L. Jones on updating/rereleasing the publication 50 years later. Part of the campaign is creating beautiful large-scale murals based on the original magazine covers.
2. “The Fox” (31st & Portland Ave) - DIY art pioneer Lauren Bader recently opened HOBA House as a communal art gallery in Portland. Here’s more about Lauren and her gallery, from a recent @courierjournal article:
“Bader always thought she wanted to be an art teacher, but she hated the bureaucracy of lecturing for art classes as a graduate student assistant at the UofL - the pressure from "a higher power" to teach art in a certain way.
She wanted to use her knowledge - a B.F.A. in sculpture & graphic design from Western KU and an arts master's degree from UofL - to make art more approachable.
In April, before she finished grad school, Bader bought an old duplex in the Portland neighborhood. After months of preparation, the communal art space includes a gallery and live-in artist studios. Soon, it will host art classes, performances and outreach programs.”
3. “Chromatic Homes” (15th & Lytle) - A four-month project representing the hard work of 40 teenagers from across Kentucky in the Governor’s Scholars program, local residents and officiated by @louisvillevisualart, this piece reimagines four iconic west end homes - including 3 in Portland - in psychedelic color.
You gotta see these things in person to believe ‘em! #louisvillelove Stop by the @deltainc502 Holiday Arts & Crafts Show today until 4pm for local vendors, yummy chili and some seasonal cheer! 25th & Portland Ave #louisvillelove #secretportlandlouisville #louisvillelove 🎼Over the levee and through the muck, to the Portland wharf we go! #louisvillelove
